The guy made a fortune, blew it all on hookers and blow, and now to the extent the brand still exists it's a Target/Wall-Mart cheap-ass bulk volksklothingsprodukt line. A work acquaintance of mine seized upon it and tried to start his own line of "beach volleyball activewear" - not even a new design, he just got the same shit from the same factory, including those terrible terrible shorts that were cut to look like you'd dropped a load in your pants. It failed, but he was basically one of the people you're talking about: straight, connected Newport Beach recreational alcoholic. He was just too ambitious, too early. Actually, I believe it started EXACTLY 20 years ago, with Mossimo.
